Gene Brownell is a 1968 graduate of Northern State University with a BS Degree in Secondary Education with major fields in Health & PE/Social Studies. He received his MS Degree in Administration and Health/Physical Education in 1977. Gene taught and coached at every level, AA-A-B, in South Dakota for twenty-seven years. He has experience in coaching basketball, cross-country, football and track & field. He was named Coach of the Year for SD High School Girls Track and Field in 1995 and again in 1996. He currently serves as the District Athletic Director and has done so since the fall of 1998. Gene was chosen as the South Dakota Athletic Director of the Year for 2004. Rose DuBois Rose
DuBois received both her bachelor of science degree in Physical Education
and master of science degree in counseling at SDSU. Rose has taught biology
and physical education at Central High School (South Dakota's largest
high school) since 1979. During high school, Rose was named most improved
in gymnastics and most valuable in track (1974 & 1975). She broke
both the state and school record in the 440 yd dash. One of her college
track relay teams also broke the school record. She has coached/advised/officiated
numerous sports and activities. Her greatest coaching achievement was
leading the Cobbler gymnasts to their first ever girl's state gymnastics
championship in 1991. She also coached the first six individual champions
in the sport. Rose was named Gymnastics Official of the Year in 2000
and was the State Meet Referee in 2002-2003. Rose has two children, Melissa
and Austin. Both were honor roll students and actively involved in extra-curricular
activities during high school. Melissa is the
Bob Winter graduated from Wessington Springs High School and received his BA at Yankton College and his MA from the University of South Dakota. He has 90 plus advanced MA hours in science, education and administration. Bob is one of the most successful coaches in South Dakota history. He won 86 percent of his games (319-53) as a coach of the Yankton girls basketball team from 1975-1991. Coach Winter's teams won eight Class A titles and were runner-up three times. They also won 12 Eastern South Dakota Conference titles. Bob was the first South Dakota girls basketball coach to reach 300 wins. He was the national girls basketball coach of the year in 1987. He was the boys basketball coach at Yankton from 1965-1974, going 143-63, winning the state title in 1974 and finishing second in 1970, '72, and '73. After coaching, Bob became Yankton's athletic director where they have hosted numerous state events including basketball, golf, and Fine Arts tournaments. Part of Coach Winter's coaching philosophy is: "I believe strongly that activities are a means by which students learn new life experiences. This is especially true with discipline, teamwork, and goal setting. Activities are an educational tool and NOT an end in itself." Bob and his wife Carol have three daughters. Jodi is an insurance expert in hospitalization insurance in Sioux Falls. Tami manages the Sioux Valley Wellness Center Children's Unit in Sioux Falls. Misty and husband Jon own and operate a fabric store in Yankton. They also have 2 grandsons - Sky (4) and Alexander (2). |
